Origins
A Côte Chalonnaise appellation which takes its name from the village of Mercurey. The vineyards under this appellation extend over 650 hectares, of which 590 hectares produce red wines with 100 classified as Premier Cru.
The right to use the words "Premier Cru" is a distinction granted to certain plots whose wines are traditionally highly regarded.
Those "Premier Cru" vineyards are specially delimited, in acknowledgement of their special characteristics and consistent quality. Only 11% of Burgundy wines can claim this honour.
